Having racked my brains, I can not think of another winter which seems to have been so harsh for many, many years. For over four weeks, we were living with sub-zero temperatures both day and night with just the odd day when the temperatures rose above freezing point. Those of us who have woodburning stoves at home were sitting pretty knowing that we were toasty warm. When the newspapers starting reporting that the UK had just 8 days of gas left, we relaxed safe in the knowledge that even if the gas supplies did run out or became rationed, we would still be able to keep cosy and warm with our supplies of wood close to hand. The government were quick to reassure the public that gas supplies were safe but the following day, the energy companies restricted the supply of gas to some of the largest companies in the UK in an effort to conserve the gas. We may have seen a thaw since the weekend but with more snow forecast for this week and the temperature lowering again, we may well see the same concerns about gas supplies coming up in the news again. Although I would miss not having my central heating system if the worst came to the worst, the security of being safe in the knowledge that my woodstove can heat my house just as well is very reassuring indeed!
