Having racked my brains, I can not think of another winter which seems to have been so harsh for many, many years. For over four weeks, we were living with sub-zero temperatures both day and night with just the odd day when the temperatures rose above freezing point. Those of us who have woodburning stoves at home were sitting pretty. When the newspapers starting reporting that the UK had just 8 days of gas left, we were relaxed safe in the knowledge that even if the gas supplies did run out, we would still be able to keep cosy and warm with our stores of wood close to hand. Harsh winter conditions cause fuel worries
